What is Pastured Pork?

Pawnee Pride Meats, Pawnee County’s pasture based meat company, is now offering pastured pork.

Growing hogs on pasture employs the concepts that we use for pastured poultry and grass finished cattle. Simply put, they are raised on pasture, much like they were prior to any kind of confinement. We have modernized the process by controlling grazing with temporary fencing, and hand feeding a natural ration. No antibiotics, growth promoters, or pesticides; just clean air and water, fresh forages, a natural corn ration and plenty of room to play. After defining this great pig environment we searched for an ideal hog to live in it. We decided upon a heritage breed, the Berkshire, acclaimed for generations as being a hardy forager, and tasty on the plate.

We are extremely fortunate to have an award winning, family run, USDA meat plant about 10 miles from home. Den’s Country Meats processes whole hogs (about 150 pounds of freezer meat), half hogs and what we call split halves (about 40 pounds of meat coming equally between the front and hind quarters). These can be cut from standard specs or your own preferences.

So what does a hog get from pasture that it can’t get from an industrialized confinement operation?

  • First in importance is sanitation. A pasture environment is clean, breezy and sunny. This eliminates the need of antibiotics and pesticides.
  • Secondly, a pastured hog has a wide variety of forages and roots to meet its nutritional needs naturally.
  • Thirdly, it allows a hog to be a hog. They frolic, dig, eat and rest to their heart’s content. Not only is this the most humane way to raise hogs, but these hogs are actually quite content and happy.

This lifestyle produces the most nutritious and tasty meat available anywhere!
